Educating Through Connection: How Service and Solidarity Transform Family Life

By: María Isabel Saiz

In our relationships with our children, we strive to do what is best for them. We make sure they have everything they need, that they are well, feel safe, and have the opportunities they need to grow. As responsible adults, this is part of our vision for family life. But in reality, supporting them goes far beyond simply providing for their needs. We also need to build a bond in which our children see us as protective, caring, and understanding figures who are attentive to what is happening in their hearts. A relationship like this does not develop overnight. Se va construyendo en las palabras, en los gestos, en las decisiones y hasta en los límites que ponemos cada día. It is built through our words, gestures, decisions, and even the boundaries we set each day.

Teaching Values Begins with Leading by Example

Parenting goes beyond providing for our children’s needs. It means building relationships rooted in love, active listening, and trust, through which our children learn the value of empathy, solidarity, and service through our example and shared experiences. Exposing them to different realities helps them understand that they always have something to contribute and that caring for others is also a way to transform the world. At Las Pachas, we believe that a well-rounded education is built through a partnership between families and the school, nurturing compassionate, committed individuals who are aware of their purpose. Because when we learn to live with love and service, hope remains alive in the Burning Bush, as a manifestation of God’s love and blessing.

Empathy and Solidarity: Learning to See Others

Exposing our children to different realities allows them to broaden their perspectives and develop sensitivity, empathy, and social awareness. These values need to be put into practice. Beyond making a donation, connecting with others, listening to their stories, and understanding their needs invites us to reflect on how we can contribute to transforming their reality. This is how solidarity and empathy go beyond mere words and become a conscious choice. At Las Pachas, we strive to provide our students, from 3rd through 12th grade, with opportunities to participate in community engagement experiences where they take on leadership roles, designing activities that create a positive impact on different communities. Through these experiences, they gain a deeper understanding of diverse social realities and reflect with compassion on how to connect with others through respect and empathy.

Service as an Opportunity to Grow Together as a Family

Children have a lot to say about their experiences. They have questions, emotions, ideas, and unique ways of seeing the world. When we share experiences with them that go beyond our daily routines, we create opportunities to have meaningful conversations, ask new questions, and discover different perspectives together.

Serving others as a family creates opportunities to connect beyond our daily routines, have meaningful conversations, discover new perspectives, and recognize qualities in one another such as generosity, compassion, and the ability to help others. These experiences allow parents and children to see one another in a new light and understand that even small gestures can contribute to the well-being of others.

When we serve others together, values such as respect, responsibility, commitment, and solidarity go beyond abstract concepts and become meaningful experiences that shape the way we act. It is not about adding another obligation to family life, but about voluntarily choosing opportunities to support others, learn about different realities, and discover that serving others is a way of engaging with the world.

At Las Pachas, we believe that a well-rounded education extends beyond the classroom. That is why we strive to provide our students with opportunities to explore different realities, recognize their own abilities, and understand the positive impact they can have on those around them. Service is one of those experiences. It allows us to learn by doing, look beyond ourselves, and discover that we always have something to contribute.

A Well-Rounded Education That Goes Beyond the Classroom

The rapid pace at which the world is changing, along with evolving social dynamics, relationships, and the demands on our time, presents increasingly complex challenges for new generations. Preparing our children for that future means equipping them with the ability to listen, understand, collaborate, care for others, and make decisions that consider the well-being of those around them.

The world needs people who are capable of looking beyond themselves. People who can recognize the suffering of others, make a commitment, and take action. When families and schools come together in this mission, experiences of service strengthen values-based education and help our children discover that their lives have a purpose that goes beyond themselves.

At Las Pachas, we believe that educating through love, example, and service means guiding our students as they discover their purpose and recognize the impact they can have on the world. That is why we create experiences that strengthen their values, nurture their talents, and inspire them to be a light for others.
